Characteristic Body compressed, elevated back, deep, its depth 2 to 2.5 times in standard length in larger specimens. Second dorsal-fin spine laterally compressed, produced into a filament, reaching upper lobe of caudal fin when depressed in specimens more than 140 mm SL.; second anal-fin spine much shorter than length of base of anal fin; pectoral fins long, tip of depressed fins reaching to level of first anal-fin spine; caudal fin deeply forked. Scales on lateral line 41 to 43. Body silvery, with 7 to 10 pale dusky bars on upper half of sides, absent in adults. Dorsal fin hyaline except for end of filamentous spine, which is black; anal, caudal, pectoral, and pelvic fins dusky hyaline, tips of anal fin, lower lobe of caudal and pelvic fins white.
habitats Occurs in shallow inshore coastal waters to depths of at least 30 m on sandy bottoms and in estuaries. Schooling; feeds by sieving small vertebrates from sand. 
Distribution Distributed from East Africa to the central Indo-Malayan area, as far east as the Philippines and north to Taiwan and southern Japan. It is found in southwestern and southern Taiwanese waters.
